Supervision in Hawaiʻi
An overview of Hawaii’s requirements for post-MSW supervised clinical social work experience.
Hawaii requires candidates to complete 3,000 hours of post-MSW supervised clinical social work experience within a timeframe of no less than two years and no more than five years. These hours must be distributed as follows:
- Direct practice — at least 2,000 hours must focus on assessment, clinical diagnosis, and psychotherapy.
- Collateral duties — a maximum of 900 hours can include client-centered advocacy, consultation, and evaluation.
Supervision hour requirements
You must log at least 100 hours of face-to-face supervision during your 3,000 hours of clinical work experience:
- Individual supervision: at least 60 hours must be one-on-one.
- Group supervision: a maximum of 40 hours can be conducted in small groups of up to six supervisees.
Role and focus of supervision
In practice, clinical supervision goes far beyond administrative check-ins. It is an evaluative and educational process designed to:

Emphasizing culturally responsive practices specific to Hawaii’s diverse populations, trauma-informed care, and other evidence-based interventions.
Managing how your own history and reactions show up in the therapeutic space.
